Hi I just found your blog and have a question. I know NOTHING about gardening and my first attempt was sunflowers. In fact dwarf sunflowers. They are still somewhat small and tonight when watering the a couple leaves have holes in them. I couldnt see any bugs. Got any suggestions????

You might want to inspect closer and underneath the leaves you might have inch worms or caterpillars. Also we miracle grow at least every 2 weeks, we live in the desert so we need to do it a little more often, but also plants in pots need a weaker strength but weekly instead of 2 weeks. Also sunflowers need full sun anything less and they don't do well.
Hope this helps give you some ideas!

Laura,
I know the kind you are talking about I don't use that kind but I prefer Miracle Grow that is the name of it and we use it every 2 weeks and sooner during the hot growing season. You kind of get a feel for how often to do it as you garden. You might consider keeping a garden journal on what you do and what works on your garden write down the dates you plant and miracle grow and so on. It's really helpful!
Are your sunflowers in the ground or in pots? In the desert when we plant things in the ground you need to make sure you work in a LOT of garden soil and very well too since our dirt is very poor and sandy. I think Sunflowers are a great starter flower try getting other varieties too like the branching kind look at seed packets to see how they grow. I personally love the kind that look like the wild sunflowers (daisy-like and branch out a lot).
Another good starter plant is Allysum, Cosmos, Lavender (but a potted plant for lavender) some to buy potted as well are Autumn Sage any sage or salvia. Roses do well too you can check out a book on rose gardening at the library that's what I did at first when i started gardening.
Hope this gives you some ideas!
